Hollywood’s shining star cashes in on tech investments
Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds has recently pocketed over $300 million after American telecommunications company T-Mobile proposed to buy a phone network in which he has a stake. Reynolds owns 25% of telecommunications company Mint Mobile, which T-Mobile plans to acquire for $1.35 billion.
Reynolds humorously commented on the deal, saying, “We’re thrilled that T-Mobile outbid an aggressive last-minute offer from my mom, Tammy Reynolds.” T-Mobile is the second-largest mobile phone operator in the United States.
The actor was actively involved in Mint’s advertising campaigns through his firm Maximum Effort. This company has also created ads for Peloton and Reynolds’ gin brand, Aviation American Gin, which was sold to beverage giant Diageo in 2020 for $610 million.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Reynolds described his company’s work as “fast advertising” aimed at creating short viral ads. “Everything we do is rudimentary. It’s quick, it’s inexpensive,” he said.
Additionally, Reynolds has shares in Welsh soccer team Wrexham AFC.
Hollywood Career
Reynolds continues to star in films and is one of the highest-paid actors globally. In fact, he was the world’s second-highest-paid actor in 2020, according to Forbes, earning over $20 million per movie, just behind Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
In a 2018 interview, Reynolds recalled his first acting role in 1991 when he was a teenager and had a side job as a newspaper delivery boy. He was paid $150 for that performance. “I thought I was like a billionaire,” Reynolds said.
In recent years, there have been rumors that he might attempt to purchase the Ottawa Senators hockey team. Reynolds is one of many celebrities with business ventures unrelated to the film industry.
Ashton Kutcher owns a venture capital firm with stakes in Uber, Skype, and Airbnb. Snoop Dogg and Jared Leto are investors in Reddit, to name just a few examples.
Despite his fortune, Reynolds continues to act. He is set to star in “Deadpool 3” alongside actor Hugh Jackman, who will play Wolverine, next year.
