Google Unveils Next-Generation AI for Developers and New AI-Powered Features in Google Workspace

2 min

Google has announced significant advancements in its commitment to bring generative artificial intelligence (AI) to developers and businesses worldwide. The tech giant has launched new AI-based products and services, including a new API called PaLM and a prototyping platform called MakerSuite, which will allow developers and businesses to harness the power of Google’s most advanced language models. In addition, Google is introducing new AI-powered features in its productivity suite, Google Workspace.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, shared details about these new offerings in a recent blog post. Kurian highlights how breakthroughs in generative AI are fundamentally changing the way people interact with technology and how Google has been responsibly developing cutting-edge language models to safely incorporate these capabilities into its products.

PaLM API and MakerSuite are two of the new offerings Google has introduced for developers interested in experimenting with generative AI. The PaLM API provides an easy and safe way to build on top of Google’s best language models, while MakerSuite offers an intuitive prototyping environment with tools for prompt engineering, synthetic data generation, and custom model tuning – all supported by robust safety features. Selected developers can access the PaLM API and MakerSuite in Private Preview today, with a waitlist to follow soon.

For developers looking to build and customize their own models and apps using generative AI, Google’s AI models, including PaLM, are now accessible on Google Cloud. The company is bringing new generative AI capabilities to its Google Cloud AI portfolio to help developers and organizations access enterprise-level safety, security, and privacy features, as well as integrate with their existing Cloud solutions:

  • Generative AI support in Vertex AI: Developers and businesses already use Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform to build and deploy machine learning models and AI applications at scale. Google is now providing foundation models, initially for generating text and images, with plans to expand into audio and video. Google Cloud customers will be able to discover models, create and modify prompts, fine-tune them with their own data, and deploy applications that use these powerful new technologies.
  • Generative AI App Builder: To cater to businesses and governments looking to build their own AI-powered chat interfaces and digital assistants, Google is introducing the Generative AI App Builder. This tool connects conversational AI flows with out-of-the-box search experiences and foundation models, helping companies build generative AI applications in minutes or hours.
  • New AI partnerships and programs: In addition to announcing new Google Cloud AI products, the company is committed to being the most open cloud provider. Google is expanding its AI ecosystem and specialized programs for technology partners, AI-focused software providers, and startups. Trusted testers are already accessing Vertex AI with Generative AI support and the Generative AI App Builder.

Over 3 billion people currently benefit from AI-powered features in Google Workspace, such as Smart Compose in Gmail and auto-generated summaries in Google Docs. Now, Google is introducing a new set of features for a limited group of trusted testers that make the writing process even easier. In Gmail and Google Docs, users can simply type in a topic they would like to write about, and a draft will be instantly generated for them. This feature streamlines tasks like welcoming new employees, allowing users to quickly customize the message or adjust the tone with just a few clicks. These new experiences will be rolled out to testers in the coming weeks.

As generative AI is an emerging and rapidly evolving technology with complex challenges, Google invites external and internal testers to pressure test new experiences and adheres to AI Principles to guide its work. These principles also serve as an ongoing commitment to customers worldwide who rely on Google’s products to build and grow their businesses safely.
